Itinerary

Exped Days 1 & 2

Start Kathmandu.

The trek starts at our Thamel hotel in Kathmandu. There will be a full trek briefing and an opportunity to meet the team, this evening.

Exped Day 4

Fly to Lukla (2800m) Trek to Phakding (2610m). A spectacular short internal flight takes us to this tiny airstrip town and the gateway to the Sherpa Kingdom. After lunch we start our short trek along the typically stony path that descends from the forested terraces of Lukla right into the Dudh Kosi valley and the brightly painted lodges of Phakding. There are good views of Kusum Kanguru’s North Face (6367m)

Exped Day 5

Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m). Into the Sherpa capital and the heart of the Khumbu. You will now be becoming familiar with local protocol for passing chortens, mani stones, yaks, spinning prayer wheels etc. and enjoying the hustle and bustle of trekking and everyday life that exists on the ‘Everest Trail’. At Monjo we enter Sagarmartha National Park and can visit the small visitor centre there. Four hours

Exped Day 7

Namche Bazaar to Pangboche (3930m). We climb steeply out of Namche, turn the corner, and are immediately presented with superb views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and our destination, Ama Dablam. Crossing the Dudh Kosi involves a steep descent to Phunki Thanghka and its fine water driven prayer wheels before re-ascending to Thyangboche. The famous Sherpa monastery can be visited here, and the surrounding panorama is rightly deemed to be one of the most magnificent mountain viewpoints in the world. The going is easy now and Pangboche, the highest year-round settlement in the valley, is soon reached. Six hours

Accommodation

Whilst in Kathmandu, before and after your trek, we do like a little bit of comfort!

That's why we have handpicked some of the best hotels around. But the nerve centre is at the Hotel Aloft in the centre of Thamel. This is where the vast majority of EverTrekkers will be staying and the address you need to add to your entry form and whenever asked.

As big as both these are, is it does sometimes fill up with other trekking clients, so we always have some equal alternatives so you will always have a nice hotel to stay in. This will be arranged by our team in Kathmandu so you don’t need to worry, and all transfers will be arranged and taken care of.

Things do happen in real time in adventure travel, some people come back to the hotel early, and others arrive late and this can affect the availability of rooms. We do try and give notice of any changes but please don’t be alarmed if you find out abit last minute there has been a hotel change.

Along the trek you will stay in comfortable lodges and Tea houses (not pictured). These do change depending on the time of year you visit but all are on a twin sharing basis unless otherwise stated.

Climbing Experience

Ama Dablam is a climbers mountain. You will need exceptional physical fitness and climbing skills. Clients should be able to take care of themselves during climbing days. Eating well, staying hydrated from the start of the expedition, making sure your gears are in check and functional during the climb should be your second nature. Your Sherpa expedition leader will guide and motivate you throughout but a lot of the effort lies within you and your ability to climb. We suggest certain skills especially for Ama Dablam style expedition.

Rock climbing indoors and outdoors

(i) learn the basics of wearing harness and helmets

(ii) tying figure 8 knot and stopper knot

(iii) basics of using belaying device correctly

(iv) Use ascending and descending devices

(iv) basics of using ropes , start/end when climbing

(v) learning knowledge of moving while using the gears and being checking the safety features simultaneously.

The more experience you have on rock climbing, taking on tougher rotes in different types of rock, the better it is for you to get familiar with climbing style and adjusting during the expeditions.

Abseiling.

This is the simplest yet the one of the most important skills to master. Some multi - pitch abseiling knowledge/experience are also required

Climbing on different terrains. Slab rocks, vertical rocks. Scrambling on steep terrains.

Use of Crampons and Ice axe.

Winter ice climbing or mountaineering courses are recommended. You should be able to kick step and balance with ice axe on icy slopes to ascend on vertical climb. Ice arrest skills to save your self incase of slips or fall, being comfortable while descending and abseiling with crampons in all types of terrains.

Climbing in Altitude.

We will be climbing Island peak as a training/acclimatising peak. Your prior experience in climbing should give you a good understanding of how your body copes in high altitude. You are responsible to build you fitness up to the best level. Our itineraries are designed to be able to help you with proper acclimatisation. Equally important clients have to be aware of their eating pattern and staying hydrated.
